Registered Genetic Counsellor

Definitions
  • MHGSA: Member of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia. Allied health professionals who have completed a tertiary qualification in Genetic Counselling that is recognised by the HGSA for practice as a genetic counsellor.
  • FHGSA: Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia. Allied health professionals who have completed additional training and been granted FHGSA Certification in Genetic Counselling.
Registration Status:
  • Registered-Clinical: Certified for practice as a genetic counsellor with no restrictions.
  • Provisional-Clinical: Qualified for practice as a genetic counsellor, with additional supervision and/or continuing professional development requirements as working towards Registered status.
  • Active: Qualified to practice as a genetic counsellor.
  • Lapsed: Failed to meet or submit the requirements for annual Registration. NOTE: This status will also apply to those who have met all requirements but have yet to pay their fee for the current registration period.
  • Expired: Failed to meet or submit the requirements for annual Registration for more than 3 years.
  • Suspended: Registration suspended for a defined period of time by the HGSA Professional Concerns and Complaints Committee or Appeal Panel.
  • Terminated: Registration has been terminated indefinitely the HGSA Professional Concerns and Complaints Committee or Appeal Panel.
  • Retired: Retired from practice.
