Professional Concerns and Complaints for Genetic Counsellors

There is an independent process through the Human Genetics Society of Australasia for receiving, overseeing, managing and resolving complaints against MHGSA or FHGSA genetic counsellors or individuals who refer to themselves as genetic counsellors. This protects the public from harm by determining the minimum ethical practice standards of genetic counsellors, and ensures there is a fair process of determining complaints of a breach in professional standards against any FHGSA or MHGSA genetic counsellor.

Outcomes of the Complaint Management Process that result in suspension or termination of membership and/or certification status are reported to the relevant regulatory bodies, published on the HGSA Register where they are available to the public, and otherwise released or published as required by law or directed by the Professional Concerns and Complaints Committee (PCCC). Serious ethical misconduct may result in restrictions on practice or other penalties.
