What is Cytogenetics?
Cytogenetics is a branch of genetics that is concerned with the study of the structure and function of the cell, especially the chromosomes. It includes routine analysis of G-Banded chromosomes, other cytogenetic banding techniques, as well as molecular cytogenetics such as fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH).
What is certification in Cytogenetics?
The HGSA offers two specialist applied qualifications in Cytogenetics:
- Part 1, MHGSA (Cytogenetics), is available to candidates with a minimum of three years relevant cytogenetic experience
- Part 2, FHGSA (Cytogenetics), is available to candidates who have
- a minimum of eight years relevant cytogenetic experience and
- a total of 10 years experience in a clinical laboratory and
- the MHGSA (Cytogenetics) qualification
