POSITION IN VCGS TRANSLATIONAL GENOMICS UNIT
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a scientist to join the Translational Genomics Unit (TGU) at the Victorian Clinical Genetics Services (VCGS). This position is designed as a training position for current or prospective RCPA Faculty of Science Trainees. The TGU is a state-of-the-art facility that is among the first in Australia to offer an accredited Clinical Whole Exome Sequencing Service, and is equipped with cutting edge next generation sequencing technology as well as extensive robotics and bioinformatics analysis capacity. As part of the VCGS, the TGU is tightly integrated with other laboratories covering all aspects of a modern genetic diagnostic service, including cytogenetics, micro array technologies and non-invasive prenatal testing. The TGU is also tasked with the development and optimisation of new assays and technologies for implementation in the diagnostic service.
This position is ideal for those scientists seeking to start or further their medical scientist career in one of Australia’s preeminent genetic diagnostic laboratories. It will allow you to work in one of the most exciting fields of molecular genetic diagnostics, while providing ample opportunity to cover all requirements of RCPA FSc training.
A full-time position is available for a Grade 1- 3 Medical Scientist. This is a key role in the Translational Genomics Unit, responsible for the provision of a timely and efficient clinical exome service. A suitable applicant will have M.Sc., or PhD qualification with genetics as a main focus. Current or anticipated enrolment in the RCPA FSc training program is essential, as are a minimum of 36 month of equivalent full time employment in an accredited molecular genetics laboratory or in any other laboratory with a demonstrable focus on clinically relevant genetics/genomics research. Demonstrated experience and expertise in the direct performance and interpretation of a wide range of diagnostic procedures and competency in molecular and genetic technologies, familiarity with genomic technologies and basic bioinformatics analysis is preferred.
