Molecular Genetics Society of Australasia

Welcome to the webpage for the Molecular Genetics Society of Australasia (MGSA).

The MGSA was established in 2005 and formally approved by the HGSA Council in March 2006. It was formed to serve the needs of the growing community of professional molecular geneticists in Australasia. Primarily, the society exists to act as the voice of and for molecular geneticists within the HGSA and the wider community.

As a special interest group of the HGSA, the MGSA has a strong focus on clinical molecular genetics, but the society is intended to be inclusive, and it’s members therefore recognize the importance of both basic and translational research in human genetics and welcome researchers and academic scientists as members. The society also recognizes the emerging dominance of molecular methodologies in the diagnosis of human malignancies and infection, and also welcomes scientists and clinicians working in these areas to participate in the MGSA’s activities.

Our broad aims are:

  • To promote clinical molecular genetics a discipline to health professionals and the wider community.
  • To promote excellence in clinical molecular genetic testing by developing best practice guidelines and standards
  • To ensure an on going high standard of molecular testing by providing molecular QA materials and proficiency programs to the molecular genetics community
  • To foster communication among members via its list serve.
  • To encourage the continuing professional development of its members via workshops, meetings and certification in molecular genetics
